Interested in Volunteering at Austin's Place?Dear Volunteer, What an absolutely beautiful autumn we have had. But soon our season will change; we will see less of the sun and will have snow, wind and ice. It is after all East Central Illinois. Our prayer this season is twofold -- first, that single homeless women in Champaign will find a warm, safe place to stay in Austin’s Place, and second that God will provide us with volunteers needed to keep Austin’s Place open each night during the coldest part of winter. This will be the fifth winter that Austin’s Place has been open. It is because of you and others like you, our faithful volunteers, that this is possible. We on the Shelter Planning Committee want you to know how much we appreciate what you have contributed. We are asking for your support again this winter. Thank you, Rev. Mary Brady Associate Pastor of Discipleship Austin’s Place Adviser FUMC | Can we count on you this year?

We will be needing help from December 1, 2011 to March 31, 2012. _________________________________________________ More detailed information: Austin’s Place is looking for volunteers to stay overnight at the shelter. Each evening, from 8:15 p.m. 7:00 a.m., two volunteers stay at the shelter. Volunteers set up a volunteer check in table, snacks/drinks for women guests, greet women guests, assist women guests in setting up sleeping area. Lights are out at 10 p.m. until 6:30 a.m. Volunteers can bring computers, reading material, puzzles, etc., and may sleep in shifts, but one volunteer needs to be awake at all times. In the morning, volunteers prepare coffee/tea, offer snacks and conversation and assist women to leave the shelter to go to the TIMES Center. Other volunteers drive our van from First United Methodist Church in the evening at 8:30 p.m. to Center for Women in Transition to pick up women guests and bring them back to the shelter. In the morning, at 6:45 a.m., the van driver leaves First United Methodist Church with our women guests and takes them to the TIMES Center. Austin’s Place also solicits laundry volunteers. Volunteers come to Austin’s Place one day/night a week, pick up laundry and laundry detergent, do the laundry off-site at your home or laundromat, and return the clean laundry to Austin’s Place that week. The laundry is sheets, pillow cases, washcloths, towels, blankets and occasionally comforters. We also have opportunities for assisting our Donations Coordinator solicit and pick up donations. |
